WHAT ARE TMT REBARS?

TMT Rebars, also called as TMT Sariya(in India), are new generation steel bars that are used for the construction of structures like bridges, dams, buildings, flyovers, etc. Thermo mechanically treated (TMT) bars were introduced in India during 1980-1985. TMT stands for “Thermo Mechanical Treatment”, a thermo mechanical process. TMT Bars are much stronger compared with conventional Rebars and give up to 20% more strength to concrete structure with same quantity of steel. Ductility of TMT bars are same as that of mild steel hence, it is very suitable for making hooks, vibrating structures subjected to reversible stresses as in case of machine foundation and for high rise structures subjected to strong earthquake and wind forces.

The process of TMT Bar manufacturing includes rolling, water quenching, heat treatment, heating and cooling at multiple stages in single process. This results in a harder outer surface while the inner core cools slowly resulting in the ductile inner core. These processes boost TMT Bars Tensile Strength, Weldability and Stress Resistance.

Top Quality TMT Bars are manufactured in advanced process plants and passes through rigorous processes that determines its physical and chemical properties.

Quality of TMT Bars depends on certain factors;

  • Raw Materials used
  • Rolling Mill
  • Quality of Production Plant

Grades of TMT Bars in India – Fe415 / Fe500 / Fe550

Size of TMT Bars

TMT steel bars come in different diameters like 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 32mm, 36mm, 40mm, etc. and now some well-known TMT manufacturing companies are planning to manufacture in larger diameters

Future Scope of TMT Bars:

It is expected that in coming days, big steel bar producing company may go further for high grade TMT bars like Fe600 to Fe-650, which will be having high strength, ductility, bendability and other desirable properties.
